"[The worldwide environmental movement is] not being
led by business, and it should be, because businesses are really just your
wealthy neighbors, and neighbors are supposed to help each other.
Business knows now to sell. We can help make environmental issues sexy,
and once we have peoples attention, we can start sharing crucial
information. There's no use just telling people what's wrong-you have to help
them figure out what to do about it"
Anita Roddick, Orion, Winter 1990

"The
Conservationist's most important task, if we are to save the earth, is to
educate." Peter Scott,
founder chairman of World Wildlife Federation, quoted in Sunday Telegraph,

SUSTAINABLE
WHAT?
Sustainable
Development is... "development that meets the needs
of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs..." -from the
World Commission On Environment and
Development's report, Our Common Future (Oxford: Oxford University
Press, 1987)
There are many definitions to the complex idea
of sustainable development. Meeting the needs of future generations
depends on
learning to balance the social, environmental and economic
objectives of today.
Three main areas of focus comprise
the sustainability model: social, environmental and economical
sustainability. Social sustainability suggests
cultural preservation, upward mobility, equity and
empowerment. Environmental and economic sustainability objectives are
especially intertwined.
In order to achieve both, we must reduce
environmental degradation while simultaneously creating enduring economic
activity without depleting our resources.
